Orthopaedic Trauma Association
The Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) is the world's leading authority in orthopaedic research, education and patient advocacy. The mission of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) is to promote excellence in care for the injured patient, through provision of scientific forums and support of musculoskeletal research and education of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the public. OTA members provide worldwide leadership through education, research and patient advocacy. The Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) engaged BlueBolt to help combine all their disparate website content and events into one cohesive and relevant site search experience for their members and guests. As the world's leading authority in orthopedic research, education and patient advocacy, the mission of the OTA is to promote excellence in care for the injured patient, through provision of scientific forums and support of musculoskeletal research and education of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the public.
OTA came to BlueBolt with an abundance of disparate content including an online textbook, video library, web pages, events, Continuing Medical Education classes, podcast content, PDF documents, research, community discussion, member contact information and more – all across different software platforms.
Federated site search retrieves information from a variety of sources via a search application built on top of one or more search engines. When a user makes a query which is distributed to the search engines, databases or other query engines participating in the federation, results are aggregated and received from the search engines for presentation to the website user.
BravoSquared is a cloud hosted Software as a Service (SaaS) platform, which provides federated search capabilities, as well as a smart product recommendation engine. This platform created by BlueBolt provides omnichannel search functionality, served up in a unified and easy to navigate site search experience for customers.
BlueBolt’s Creative Design team works with our client to design wireframes that work within brand guidelines, showing the federated site search journey and results clients will experience.
The Orthopaedic Trauma Association hired BlueBolt to help them combine data from many digital training sources, including the OTA International Journal, Journal of Orthopedic Trauma, OTA’s website, the Orthopaedic Trauma Association Learning Center and OTA’s Community website. Across their omnichannel training opportunities, content is offered to patients and surgeons alike, with physicians having access to member content, which includes conferences, continuing medical education opportunities, and an online community. Given the complexity of OTA’s mission and training materials, BlueBolt recommended implementing BravoSquared to harness its Federated Site Search capabilities in order to unite all OTA’s content in one site search experience. BlueBolts’ team reviewed OTA’s existing data sources and format, analyzed the data and meta-data structure’s readiness to support business objectives, current deficiencies in search, and future goals. This process helped document a plan for how all data points from each content source would be acquired for the search index.
An important process in creating a Federated Site Search experience is working with a designer to ensure results are delivered in a unified, engaging manner that is also consistent with brand guidelines. BlueBolt’s creative team worked with OTA to design the best template and landing page for their site search results. During this phase, BlueBolt worked with the client’s team to understand what needed to be accomplished from a template perspective, so that everyone was in agreement before development started.
For OTA’s project, BravoSquared’s search interface features included:
- Faceting capability – Provided users with ways to filter the results of a keyword search
- Content segmenting – Grouped content by type or source
- Differentiated results display by content type – Allowed search results to be displayed differently according to content type
- Specialized media display – Enabled video and image results to be consumed within the search results, by triggering a pop-up lightbox
- Sorting control –Allowed users to sort content according to different characteristics found in the data
- Data collection – Pulled content from many sources, including associated taxonomy and relevant meta data to assist in search relevancy tuning
- User interface creation – Created HTML templates for the search input box, main search results page, and search results interface, using best practices of responsive design
- Bravo cloud configuration – Configured the cloud to host client data and provide search functionality
BlueBolt’s team also continues to perform search relevancy tuning monthly in order to apply global preferences for results ranking. This tuning process establishes the best balance between different variables that can affect search rankings, such as the balance between the recency of content versus how well the content title matches the search keyword. This process also enables OTA’s team to prioritize content type search results, based on their members’ needs. Ultimately this process ensures that the search process is continually fine-tuned, converting, and meeting OTA’s goals overall.
Federated Site Search with BravoSquared was the answer to OTA’s content dilemma. Instead of having to create a new website with all their disparate digital content migrated to the new site, BlueBolt was able to create a streamlined site search project for them, at a fraction of the scope and budget a new website entails. Now, orthopedic surgeons and patients alike are able to search for content and easily find the answers they need.
